an idiot. A schoolchildren's term, fash-ionable from the 1980s, which is a vari-ant form of smeg or smeggy (from smegma), a word popular among young males in the punk era. The altered pro-nunciation is influenced by Yiddish words such as schmock, schmuck, sch-mendrick, etc.
